Epson states that the SX400 has a maximum A4 print speed of up to 34ppm and a 10 x 15 photo print time of 75 seconds. If these were true, the SX400 would be one of fastest inkjet printers ever made. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get anywhere close to these claims in our tests and this wasn’t due to the machine being faulty because others have found similar results. On a positive note the SX400’s print quality makes up for its lack of speed, this is down to its impressive 5760 x 1440dpi which results in pin sharp dark text when printing text documents and photo prints with vivid colours tones. The scanning capabilities of the device are not quiet as impressive as the print quality but it is a great feature and is able to scan any type of document you wish up to A4 size. It also comes with photo editing software and OCR text recognition software which enables you to scan pages of printed text and convert it into a word documents which can be edited as required. The photo copier makes use of the A4 flat bed scanner so can copier documents up to A4 size and it does so with reasonable speed and quality, though is a bit limited as it can only automatic copies nine copies at a time, so its not great for large volumes. Last but not least running costs for the SX400 in terms of the cost of it printer ink cartridges are reasonable compared to it competitors. Epson SX400 ink cartridges consists of four individual Epson inks which cost £30 for a full set of genuine OEM cartridges or £15 for compatibles.
